Kilmainham Gaol–Go to Prison in Dublin
Kilmainham Gaol opened for operation in the late 1700s, but the prison became a site of controversy and interest over 200 years later. In the era of the independence movements growth in the early 20th century and the Easter Rising, Kilmainham housed many famous Irish Republicans. In fact, some of those involved in the Easter Rising were put to death at the now-unused prison, continuing a tradition of imprisoning rebels in the structure.
Today, Kilmainham is a popular tourist site. People stroll the grounds and learn more about Irelands complicated history and how Irish Republicanism grew in the face of some rather intimidating forces.
